SNAKESUNLIMITED
By Jason Hood
I am currently working with a single pair of Spilotes from the John Andemann line. Spilotes are easily one of my favorite snakes to work with and to just have in my home. They are curious, interactive snakes that watch your every move and because they are diurnal they are out all day to see you and anything else that moves. I often get the feeling of being watched only to look up and see a curious Spilotes staring down at me. While they have a bad rep for being biters my animals have never bitten me and that might have a lot to do with being CB and being handled gently. Spilotes are reported to grow to 14 feet long making them one of he longest colubrids but an expectation of 8-10 feet more realistic of the average animal and more than enough snake for most people.
Caging should be large and include many climbing branches and perches while being pretty basic as well as they have a very fast metabolism. Racks are not an option for these snakes in my opinion. These are too majestic and active, if you want a snake to put in a rack there are many other options out there.
